Candidate Questions and Responses

What do you feel is the most pressing issue facing surgical technologists today, and how can AST help?
The most pressing issue for surgical technologists is the lack of recognition for the important role we play in providing direct care for the patient in the operating room.  Although the surgical technology profession is becoming more widely known, it does not receive the respect for the education and knowledge we bring into the operating room.  We can correct this oversight through the legislative process.  Every other profession is certified in their job field.  Certification speaks to competency.  If we are to be recognized, we must pursue certification for all those who practice our profession.

How do you motivate surgical technologist to become involved in AST?
We can motivate surgical technologists by enlightening them to the benefits of belonging to their professional organization. There is strength in numbers. It is that strength that will aid us in accomplishing our goals in defining our profession. We sometimes are our own worst enemy, by succumbing to the naysayers who strive to keep us from being recognized in our own right. We are important to the quality care of the perioperative patient and should be recognized as such.

How will your past experience help you to function as a member of the Board of Directors?
Having been successful serving in many capacities within the Michigan State Assembly, I feel I can share those experiences with surgical technologists everywhere to facilitate their state assembly goals and objectives. The role of the Board of Directors is to represent the membership at large.  Additionally, having worked as a staff technologist, staff surgical assistant, program director, and currently as a manager, I feel I will be a knowledgeable, well-informed active voice for members, as they look to AST for assistance in pursuing their state assembly’s mission
