Candidate Questions and Responses

What do you feel is the most pressing issue facing surgical technologists today, and how can AST help?
One of  the most pressing issue facing surgical technologists today is educating the public as to just exactly what a surgical technologist is.   How many times do you hear or read news items that refer to the surgical team of doctors and nurses?  We know who is behind the mayo stand. The public does not.  I would like to see a plan that will educate the public concerning surgical technology.   .  To gain legislative support, our lawmakers and the public must be aware of the integral role we play in care of the surgical patient.

How do you motivate surgical technologists to become involved in AST?
If surgical technologists are not involved in AST upon entering the profession, they oftentimes will not see the importance. You hear the question all too often, “what does AST do for me?” After pointing out all the positive aspects of AST membership, I also point out that AST will only be as strong as its membership participation. If we are going to remain a small number, we will always reap small benefits. Through membership and participation in AST, we will realize more benefits, as well as increased control of our profession

How will your past experiences help you function as a member of the Board of Directors?
As a current member of the AST Board of Directors,  I have had the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of addressing some very trying issues. This has given me great insight in strengthening and protecting AST. This is not a part-time position that you elected me to, and I have given many hours of hard work in service to our organization. I have learned that to work on the Board has  required me to vote “no” for the good of the organization, at times when the popular thing to do would be  to vote “yes.”
