About Surgical Technologists Community Outreach
In 2008 in Orlando, Florida, the AST Board of Directors started off a new tradition and decided to spend a day before conference with an organization, preferably relating to children or teens, who might be inspired to become surgical technologists.

Boys and Girls Club Florida
The Board selected the Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida, which has a downtown branch with approxiimately 30 children who live in the Coalition for the Homeless shelter. The day's activities include gowning/gloving, heart anatomy, laparoscopic trainer, syringe water race and "Operation." Board games, CD/DVDs, video game, a DVD palyer and stereo and cash. A $1,000 donation was made to the club's field trip fund.

Boys Town Nevada
In 2009, in Las Vegas, the Board selected Boys Town Nevada, which has a population of 30 children, ages five to 18. These children arrive here through parental neglect, abuse and abandonment. That day the children rotated among stations that included gowning and gloving, laparoscopic trainer, "Operation," Mr Potato Head and saw bones. Many items on the organization's wish list were supplied. Backpacks filled with surprises, t-shirts stuffed toys generated lots of smiles. In addition, $2,000 cash was donated, and five sets of cookware were provided.
