Becoming Legislatively Active

Your State Assembly, A Most Important Voice For You

The most powerful voice in our government is that of the constituent, particularly when that constituent is part of a group. Your AST state assembly empowers your individual members to effect change in state and federal government that will enhance your ability to provide quality patient care, protect your career, and choose the future of your profession. This section provides you with basic information about getting started with being legislatively active as a state assembly.

Getting Started

Legislative changes impacting health care professionals are imminent at both the state and federal levels of government. With changes in health care, there has been an increasing call for the regulation of all health-care professionals. The formation of your state assembly has provided you with a much stronger voice with which to effect these political changes, and to participate in state and federal government activities.

This guide was developed to help you and your AST state assembly become political advocates for your members and for the goals of the Association of Surgical Technologists. Political advocacy is the process whereby individuals or organized groups support, modify, or halt the passage of proposals made by an institution or legislative body. The power of political advocacy is greatly increased when individuals form organizations with mutual interests and concerns and combine their lobbying efforts.

There are three basic types of advocacy. Read more here ...
