Students and Your State Assembly

NYAST 2018 Surgical Technology Scholastic Bowl Rules All teams answer the same questions. All questions will be displayed on a large viewing screen for the audience to see as well as the participants. 1. Each school with a team is limited to a maximum of 2 students and there can be 1 alternate. Teams are encouraged to select a captain and an alternate. Team members can be first or second year students. 2. Each team will be seated and positioned in clear view of a large projection screen and provided four, 10X12 printed signs containing a letter A, B, C, or D. Judges will be placed behind each team with a grade sheet. Judges can be a faculty member or student from an opposing school. Judges may not oversee the team from their own school. 3. For round one, 40 multiple choice questions will be projected one at a time. The moderator will read the question including the multiple choice options. When the moderator finishes reading the choices, the designated time keeper will start the clock for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, a bell will ring. Each team must hold up their answer (A-D) immediately following the bell. The moderator will then present the correct answer. The judge will record the team’s answer and the correct answer on the grade sheet. • If a team fails to hold up a card immediately after the bell, the judge enters a 0 on the grade sheet and the team gets no credit. At the end of the first round, each judge will tally the results from the team they’ve judged and the score will be read aloud before round 2 begins. Each correct answer is worth 1 point and there is no deduction for wrong answers. 4. For the second round (the lightening round) the same format will be used. Only 30 questions will be displayed and read and the teams will only have 5 seconds to display their choice at the sound of the bell. In addition, if the team answers correctly, they will be awarded 2 points. If they answer incorrectly, they lose 1 point. If they decide not to answer, no deduction is made. 5. After the lightening round, the scores will be tallied. In the event of a tie, the team that answers more questions, right or wrong, wins the tie-breaker. The winner will be announced after the judges convene.
