In 2004, representatives from the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the Association of perioRegistered Nurses (AORN), the American Society of Nurse Anesthetists (ANA), the American Society of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) and the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) formed the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety (CSPS). The intent was to collaborate on standards and guidelines for safe practice and patient safety.
The Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety has published three statements that directly relate to surgical safety in the operating room.
